Database-First Design: Building Systems That Last

PostgreSQL Architecture Prisma Scalability

Database-First Design

UI trends change every season. Glassmorphism is in today; minimal flat design is back tomorrow. But a poorly designed database schema? That will haunt your application for its entire lifecycle.

Data is the Source of Truth

During my time as a Database Administrator, I saw firsthand how manual record-keeping fails. Transitioning to a digital, relational system isn’t just about “putting data in a computer”—it’s about defining the relationships between entities.

Why Relational Matters

  • Integrity: Ensuring that a student cannot belong to a non-existent organization.
  • Normalization: Reducing redundancy to ensure that when you update a piece of info once, it reflects everywhere.
  • Performance: Properly indexed PostgreSQL queries will always outperform “brute force” JavaScript filtering.

The Takeaway

Don’t start with Figma. Start with an Entity-Relationship Diagram (ERD). If your data logic is sound, the UI will practically build itself.
